Anti-apartheid stalwart Ebrahim Ebrahim dies
Anti-apartheid activist Ebrahim Ismail Ebrahim has died, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation said on Monday. He was 84. The foundation said Ebrahim’s life “was one of courage, characterised by the spirit of sacrifice”. Ebrahim joined the liberation movement in 1952 and later Umkhonto we Sizwe. He was arrested in 1963 and sentenced to 15 years on Robben Island, then banned and restricted on his release before going into exile. In 1986, he was kidnapped from Swaziland by SA security forces, charged with high treason and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment on Robben Island before the appeal court ruled in 1991 that his kidnapping from a foreign country was illegal. Ebrahim later served as deputy minister of international relations and co-operation.
